Changing of the Guard —
Diocletian's Palace

Every day from late May through September, the ancient stones of Diocletian's Palace come alive with the spectacle of the Smjena Dioklecijanove straže — the Changing of the Guard. Performed by the Splitski Vitezovi (Knights of Split), the ceremony sees a column of soldiers dressed in authentic Roman legionary armour march through the ancient corridors and emerge into the sunlit Peristyle square at exactly 12:00. The precision, the costumes, and the setting combine to create one of the most atmospheric moments in all of Croatia.

The ceremony traces its origins back to the Roman era, when Diocletian's personal guard would conduct formal changes of watch at the palace gates. Today's reenactment honours that tradition with painstaking attention to historical detail — every element of the soldiers' armour, weapons, and drill movements is based on archaeological and historical research. The procession passes through the Golden Gate and moves through the underground vaults before ascending into the Peristyle, allowing spectators to follow the full route through the palace.

Admission is completely free for all visitors — one of the most spectacular free experiences on the entire Dalmatian coast.
