Split, Croatia on a Budget — How Much Does It Actually Cost? (2026)

Is Split Expensive?

Split has become significantly more expensive over the past five years. It's no longer the budget destination it once was — July and August prices in particular have risen sharply and are now comparable to many Western European cities.

But with the right approach, Split is still very manageable. Here's what things actually cost in 2026.

Accommodation Costs in Split

Budget (hostel dorm): €20-35/night

Mid-range (private apartment or 3-star hotel): €70-150/night in peak season, €40-80 in June/September

Upscale (4-5 star hotel or premium apartment): €150-400+/night in peak season

Best value: Private apartments booked directly with owners (not through Booking.com or Airbnb) in residential neighbourhoods 10-15 minutes walk from the old town. Same quality, 20-30% cheaper.

Timing: June and September are 30-50% cheaper than July and August for the same accommodation.

Food and Drink Costs

Coffee: €1.50-2.50 at a local cafe, €3-5 at tourist spots on the Riva

Beer (0.5L): €3-5 at a local bar, €6-10 at waterfront tourist bars

Lunch at a local konoba: €12-20 per person including a drink

Dinner at a tourist restaurant: €25-45 per person

Fresh fish dinner (quality restaurant): €30-50 per person

Pizza or pasta: €10-15

Market lunch (bread, cheese, prosciutto, tomatoes): €6-10 for two people

Best money-saving tip: Eat where there's no English menu posted outside and no photos of food on the menu. Two streets back from any tourist area and prices drop by 30-40%.

Transport Costs

Airport bus to city: €5-7

Taxi airport to city: €25-35

Bolt/Uber within city: €5-10

City bus: €1.50-2

Ferry to Hvar (catamaran): €12-15 each way

Ferry to Brač: €4-5 each way

Car rental: €35-80/day depending on season and vehicle

Activity Costs

Diocletian's Palace underground: €10

Cathedral bell tower: €5

Blue Cave full-day tour: €70-90 (+ €20 cave entry)

Sunset cruise: €25-35

Rafting Cetina: €35-45

Krka National Park tour: €50-70 including transport

Plitvice full-day tour: €60-80 including transport

Photo session (FOTO COLORIDO): €100-150

Daily Budget Estimates

Budget traveller: €60-80/day (hostel, market food, free beaches, one paid activity every 2-3 days)

Mid-range traveller: €120-180/day (apartment, restaurant meals, one paid activity per day)

Comfortable traveller: €200-300/day (good hotel, quality restaurants, activities, day trips)
