Sailing Croatia — What to Expect (Complete Guide for 2026)
Why Croatia Is a Sailing Paradise
Croatia has over 1,000 islands, reliable summer winds, excellent marinas, and some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The coastline from Split to Dubrovnik — with Hvar, Brač, Vis, Korčula, and dozens of smaller islands in between — is one of the finest sailing routes in the world.
Sailing in Croatia is no longer a niche activity. Every summer, thousands of boats make the journey from Split southward, creating a floating community that moves between islands, anchorages, and harbours.
Types of Sailing Experiences Available from Split
Bareboat Charter (Sail Yourself)
Rent a sailboat or catamaran without a skipper. You need a sailing licence (RYA Day Skipper or equivalent) and experience. Prices start around €1,000-2,000/week for a basic sailboat, €3,000-6,000+ for a catamaran. Split is one of Croatia's main charter bases — ACI Marina Split has hundreds of boats available.
Skippered Charter (Captain Included)
Same boats as bareboat but with a professional skipper. You relax, the skipper navigates and handles the boat. Skipper cost is typically €150-200/day on top of the boat rental. Best option for those who want the sailing experience without the responsibility.
Flotilla Sailing
A group of boats sailing together with a lead boat and professional support. Good for beginners or those who want company. Several operators run weekly flotillas from Split through the islands.
Crewed Gulet (Traditional Wooden Motor-Sailor)
A gulet is a traditional Turkish-style wooden motor-sailing vessel, popular in Croatia for group charters. Full crew, cabins, meals prepared on board. Prices range from €3,000-15,000+ per week depending on size and luxury level. Split to Dubrovnik is the classic gulet route.
Day Sailing Tours
For those who want the sailing experience without a week-long commitment. Several operators run day sailing tours from Split — 6-8 hours visiting islands and anchorages with a skipper and small group. Salty Experience offers private sailing experiences with Adriatic Pass discounts. See the offer →
The Classic Split to Dubrovnik Route
The most popular sailing route in Croatia. One week, heading south from Split through the islands:
Day 1: Split → Hvar Town (3-4 hours sailing)
Day 2: Hvar → Vis or Komiža (3-4 hours)
Day 3: Vis → Korčula (4-5 hours)
Day 4: Korčula → Mljet National Park (3-4 hours)
Day 5: Mljet → Šipan island (2-3 hours)
Day 6: Šipan → Dubrovnik (2-3 hours)
One week, six completely different destinations, some of the finest sailing waters in Europe.
What Nobody Tells You
The marinas fill up. In July and August, popular marinas in Hvar Town and Korčula are fully booked by early afternoon. Arriving late means anchoring in the bay — which can be beautiful but means using the dinghy to get ashore.
The afternoon wind is real. The maestral (northwest sea breeze) builds from noon onward in summer. Sail in the morning for flat seas; expect choppy conditions from 2pm.
Provisioning is easy. Every harbour town has supermarkets and fresh markets. You won't go hungry.
The swimming is extraordinary. Drop anchor in a bay, jump off the back of the boat into turquoise water. This is the best part of sailing Croatia and no description does it justice.
Practical Information
