Best Beaches on Hvar Island: A Complete Guide (2026)
Why Hvar's Beaches Are Among the Best in Europe
Hvar stretches 68 kilometres along the Adriatic — the longest island in Croatia — and the southern coastline is one of the most dramatic and beautiful in the Mediterranean. The water here is exceptionally clear (visibility down to 30+ metres in places), the pebble beaches are sheltered from the northern winds, and the combination of pine forest and limestone rock creates a scenery that photographers never seem to be done with.
The tricky part is knowing which beaches to go to, because Hvar has dozens and they are not all equal. This guide ranks the best ones by type, with practical information for getting there.
1. Dubovica — Most Beautiful Overall
Located about 10 kilometres east of Hvar Town on the south coast, Dubovica is a small pebble cove framed by an ancient stone house and surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water. It's accessible by road (a rough track, best with an SUV or scooter) or by sea taxi from Hvar Town. The beach is small — 30-40 people fill it — but the setting is so perfect it looks staged. Come in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak crowd.
2. Pakleni Islands (Paklinski Otoci) — Best for Swimming
The Pakleni Islands are a chain of small wooded islands just off Hvar Town, accessible by water taxi in 5-15 minutes. Palmižana, the main destination, has crystal clear water, a famous restaurant, and several small beaches around the bay. Vinogradišće (also called Robinson's) is the nudist beach. Stipanska is the location of Carpe Diem Beach. Any combination of these makes for a perfect beach day — take the first taxi of the morning, move between beaches on foot, and taxi back in the evening.
3. Milna — Best for Families
About 15 kilometres west of Hvar Town, Milna is a small village with a sheltered bay and a long, gentle pebble beach that is ideal for families with children. The water is shallow and calm, the village has a few good restaurants and a small beach bar, and the drive from Hvar Town through the lavender fields is worth taking slowly.
4. Zaraće — Best Hidden Beach
On the south coast of Hvar near Gdinj, Zaraće is a dramatic pebble beach in a narrow inlet between high cliffs — it looks like something from a film set. The drive to get there requires a steep descent (again, scooter or SUV recommended), but the reward is a beach so beautiful and so rarely visited that you may have it almost to yourself even in August. The snorkelling here is exceptional.
5. Hvar Town Beach (outside the walls) — Most Convenient
If you don't want to go anywhere, the small beaches just outside Hvar Town's old walls are perfectly good — pebble, clean, with all facilities nearby. Walk east from the main harbour towards Križ and you'll find a string of small coves used by locals. Not the most spectacular but walkable from your accommodation and perfectly fine for a late-afternoon swim.
How to Get to Hvar's Best Beaches
Rent a scooter or quad: The best way to explore the south coast independently. Most beaches require some form of driving. CroQuad Hvar offers quad tours and rentals — Adriatic Pass holders save 10%.
Join a boat tour: Several tours operate from Hvar Town harbour covering the Pakleni Islands and the south coast coves. A half-day boat tour is the easiest way to see multiple beaches. These typically cost €30-50 per person.
Water taxi: Runs continuously from Hvar Town harbour to Palmižana and several other Pakleni Island beaches. €5-8 per person each way. No booking required — just show up at the taxi dock.
What to Know Before You Go
Shade: Many of Hvar's beaches have limited natural shade (no trees, just rock). Bring a sun umbrella for afternoon visits.
Shoes: Most beaches are pebble. Water shoes make a significant difference. Pack them.
Food and water: Some coves have no facilities. Bring enough water, particularly in July and August when the heat is intense.
Best months: June and September are the ideal times for beaches — warm water, fewer people, easier parking and access. July and August are beautiful but crowded.
